Philadelphia needed to more for for ex cons. Previous programs were limited to the large number of Philadelphia politicians and not extended to the rest.

Previous programs seemed to be available only to area politicians for good jobs on release from prison.

Philidephia is a toilet. I must admit. I turned down a job in the area after I visited some years ago.

philadelphia is a beautiful city with amazing architecture, art museums, history, a fascinating mixture of people, descent public transit, and an amazing series of murals displayed throughout the city.
nutter has done more in his frst 100 days to improve the city than the last mayor did in eight years. he has held two city clean up days where thousands of citizens turned out to clean up litter.
he took on the state to regulate guns.
crime has gone done.
the education department has new leadership.
as does septa (transit)
and we have movie studios moving into the suburbs (that is gov. rendell's)
Philadelphia is the only city in America which is becoming more than it was.

This is a good idea, if you cant find an job and feed your family it is hard to become a contributing member to society. However if we give ex. cons a decent paying jobs with will happen to the system of cops, judges and small tows that enjow the benifts of keeping in capativity.? Perhaps this could be the start of a change in our currupt system that enjoys the profits of incarceration, ticketing and the cultural of violence our society nurtures.
WEll, anyway just my thoughts!!!

what a way to get a tax break, i guess for most employers it'll depend on the crime!

America had a lot of unwanted people to come here in it's beginning. Even a misdemeanor can keep a person from being hired from way back in their past. God forgives and society does not. South Carolina is one of those states that makes a living by keeping people from livelihoods that would normally help a majority lead honest lives.

It is true that while everyone seems to be conducting criminal background checks, few employers seem to have a clear policy on what should bar someone from employment. When in doubt don't hire them. I don't want someone to remain chronically unemployed because he got caught with doobie when he was 19. A former employer of mine refused to hire a young guy because he had an argument with his girlfriend a few years before and the police were called. He technically had a domestic violence charge on his record although he didn't actually beat his girlfriend or really do anything that should have kept him from employment.

NAH! America has surpassed Russia in the Amt of people we have incerated. The prison industry is a buisness like like The automotive industry. They have conventions showcasing new ways to incerate prisoners and fight for contracts to build new prisons. It is about money almost as it is about crime. Our system works that way, Ask any COP he will tell you they have Quotas for writng tickets ant the beginning and end of each month.

I have alot of cop friends and have yet to hear one say they have a quota! They dont need a quota as there are more violators then they can deal with so the just pick the most egregious.

Agreed.
As recidivism goes, so goes the prison industry. Completely wrong incentives. Hence, the never-ending, never gaining a step but incredibly wasteful War on Drugs.

It is a business I didn't say it was not. Some of those cops are more crooked than your average career criminal.

A person is a criminal because he cannot function within the boundries of accepted society. So what do we do? We throw him is prison where he doesn't have to make any of the most common decisions we all have to make just to live a normal life. HNe doesn't even have to decide what he is going to eat or what bills he is going to pay - nothing every person on the outside has to do everyday. - Then we release them & expect them to suddenly be perfectly capable of functioning in normal society - I do'nt think so.
Therefore any program that can help ex-cons get jobs & be responsible citizens should be encouraged & welcomed.

We can see that "within the boundries of accepted society" depends on what position in society you have.
If we take a look at what is truly accepted in society, in the US and globally, we can see that we are in fact dictating and proscribing a moral ideal that most cannot even fulfill. The ones that can and do fulfill it are often the ones in the business of vice.
