I watched an internet "expert" say on national TV "you can sell anything on the internet except shampoo". That is what I sell on the internet.
Here is what Greg Mackie told me. "Go where the competition isn't". Greg started Mackie Design in his apartment. In six years he had a publicly traded company, employed 1000 people, and owned three 100,000 sqf buildings.
My company via internet sales has the potential of a hundred million dollars a year in sales. LESSON "Those who can't, teach"
Have a product that people want... first
Bill Gates "I don't see homes having computers" Bill Gates gets far too much credit. Paul Allan put the deal together to make an exclusive DOS software for IBM.
They had a customer before they had a product. IBM lost control of their personal computer patents, allowing mass production of personal computers. Micro Soft has the exclusive platform for the IBM style computers... the rest is history

What do we sell that is so exclusive? Stevens Salon Products, we are the only real salon product salon sold on the internet. We are asked, " are you really in salons?" Yes we are. You may recognize some of our buyers' names, John Frieda Salon, Garren New York (voted number one salon in America every year by Vogue Magazine), Buzz, at one time the official salon of The Oprah Show Production, Peter Coppela, as seen on Home Shopping Network

It sounds like you already have a service to market, writing your ideas down on paper (i.e. business plan) can help you flush out a lot of things.

keyfitter,
you could start a web portal that is computer related. you have advertisers in related businesses as well as some content. and link to an ebay store. (free marketing) you could also get an opt-in for people to join your newsletter database. and you send out a newsletter every 2 months.
that's my advice. if you wanted to buy a domain name and hosting, etc. you could go to www.judysummers.com

I think starting a business is the key to becoming really financially independent. It is not that easy but guides like this makes taking the first step less of an ordeal.

If you want to really make it in todays buisness world, with starting your own company just keep the following in mind.. Address a problem that consumers face daily, and have your product or service be the answer to their problem. Marketing is key, and you should consider mass mailing, have a great website that answers ALL the possible questions consumers will or would have about your product or service. A business plan is a good thing to have, but not a necessity unless you are looking to sell your company or business down the road, or if you are looking for investors.. Keep in mind, you dont have to be a genius to do this, I myself have no college degree, but came up with a product, got a patent and now my corporation is Global. If I can do it, anyone can.. Im living proof.. SO GO FOR IT!!!! I wish you all the best in your buisness ventures!!!

Trust Miss JaneMay on this one.
Before, my "easy life" I worked day after day for weeks until the sun came up. No weekends, no holidays, no vactions, for years. People at McDonalds were making more, often a lot more.
It's like joining the Marines, if you think you might not have it... YOU DON'T.

I've been self-employed all my life - people I know who work for a company look at me and say"gee, you're lucky. You're you're own boss no one to answer to, make your own schedule, your income is only limited by your own expectations"
To this I answer WRONG! - with that kind of thinking they will always work for the man.
Being in business for yourself is not an 9-5 proposition. If you are serious about it it is 24/7 , but that doesn't mean it has to be all consuming either.
The ability to balance your business with your family life is the most important asset a self employed person can have

No i was having a problem posting... the Z was a test
Anyway I was asking JaneMay to help me open a forum on people seeking answers in regard to starting a business.
I was making myself available to do the answering. I have bought an out of business tavern and turned into a money maker. I owned a salon that was a real money pit. I have managed bands, started a talent agency, now the women's goods manufacturer.

hi ,
These 5 things are necessary. However, I am not so sure if that is enough. You probably have to learn much more as you go along.
The problem is we will not be able to know enough before we start a business but we should know about marketing.
Marketing will build or destroy any business. With good marketing, you can sell anyhing. On the other hand, if you have the best product but poor marketing, you will not do well till much later.
Hence, it is true that poor products can sell as long as the marketing is good. I am not advocating that though. It only sells once but no more than that. Customers are smart people. They want value too.
So be great at marketing and have a fantastic product too. You will be invincible.

If you want a great opportunity just go to www.shopzone247.com, you save money while you make money. Also Jeff B (Amazon) is trying to catch up with what is already being done. He just needs to learn how to share more...like from the start of his business adventure. Just remember two words in the new model of business - Virual Marketing. Implement his in your plans and you are King.

in my opinion is missing THE FOCUS :) is deadly for a business who don't have one.. and i think there are 2 rule before you want to start a business
1. Define your business category and be different form the leader (if you chose one, try to not miss it in the future)
2. A name (also try to not be a generic name, use something different)
Those 2 steps help you position yourself in the consumer mind. Certainly those steps can be reach only if you have some money ;)

Everyone wants to be the driver of the bus, but most are passengers - the thing is- they all end up at the same place.
You don't have to have the greatest invention or name or market area to be self reliant in business.
I welcome competition. It brings people to your area.
The goal should be to have just a little more empathy with your customer and to provide just a little extra in service.
Being in business for yourself is not in most cases the road to riches, but rather a way of leading your life on your own terms- look at it realisticly & you will be a success

Your 5 steps for starting your business are good but not enough.
Just giving out business cards these days is not enough to get you customers and clients, depending on what type of business you're in.
The lifeblood of any business is getting customers and if you don't know how to do that, you should not even think of starting your own business.
And in today's internet dominated world, it is becoming extremely difficult to find customers!
It is no longer easy to start and succeed in a business, so before you take these five steps, reconsider keeping your job.

I concur, without a customer there is no sale. Come up with and idea for a product, try to sell it. If you do get a sale, create the product, close the sale, you are now in business.
My company generated $40,000 in sales before it had a real name. Mackie Design had $50,000 in sales off of a prototype

i agree with you Mark but, what you say.. is that you start and business and after that you make it better. My example is not the best one, but if you want to sell you have to place yourself into consumer mind. :)

I didn't say make it better, you must have buyers, a demand first, before starting a business. I on't know current facts, at one time churches, then beauty salons were the two fastest failures. Opening your doors doesn't mean anyone is going to walk in.
