Aug. 9, 2006, 11:23 a.m.I work exactly 40 hours a week and I have never been more miserable. I always worked 50+ and while I was stressed, I enjoyed it. This study does not appear to take into account the factors of job satisfaction. Are you challenged? Are you motivated? Are you doing what you want? Do you work with quality people?
If any of these are not true, then yes, I would agree 8 hours a day drags on and has an effect on your total well being...
If you are motivated, challenged, and working with competent, challenged, and motivated people, then I bet you could get through those 8 hours no problem. That's been my experience at least.

Aug. 9, 2006, 12:43 p.m.There is a very good argument to be made on this point. In fact studies have shown time and time again, the negative effect that longer working hours have on not only your health, but the traditional family structure.

Aug. 9, 2006, 1:25 p.m.couldnt agree more 8hrs a day drags on and there is really no reason we cant cut 2 hours a day off if i were president i would make it happen immediately

I am familiar with the saying, I apply it everyday of my life, but I'm not getting it in this context. I guess you are saying that if we work smarter then we can do the same amount of work in 4-6 hours? I don't totally disagree.
My point was that there are other factors, other than total hours worked, that affect well being, and I saw no reference to those factors in this study.
There are many people who will tell you some of their most satisfying times were when they were working on a project that they really believed in, whether or not that project required 40 or 45+ hours.
If anyone has links to other studies, I would be interested to read them.

Any job that requires more than 40 hours a week is not one I can really believe in. Period.

Aug. 9, 2006, 2:23 p.m.It's funny...I think most peopel agree, yet we all still seem to work that much. Why is that? Who is to blame?

Aug. 9, 2006, 2:24 p.m.The only two people in over 30 years of management that I have had to actually "let go" happened to be college professionsals that just could not make it in the real world. Both went back to the college market and were successfull, there!
It does not surprise me that a University would say that more that 4 - 6 hours per day is JUST TOO MUCH to expect from a worker!
By the way, I do know a number of successful college professionals that can and in many cases have made it in the real world, but I doubt that they would agree with this "study"!
I think this is a case of those who can't trying to imply that the vast majarity should agree with them instead of with those who can, and do!
The part I can't figure is that I spent a lot more than 4 - 6 hours a day while in college, so why should I be able to do less in the work force?

Aug. 9, 2006, 2:33 p.m.I work 8 hours each day, 5 days a week...my work is not stressful, nor does it actually consume the entire 8 hours. I would rather work 4-10 hour days and enjoy the 3 day weekend! I work to play...doesn't everybody?

Aug. 9, 2006, 4:12 p.m.hzmp32001, you hit the nail on the head. When I liked my work 50+ hours per week was nothing. Now that I'm miserable I barely "work" 25 a week.
I am a firm believer in the 4 day a week (ten hours a day) schedule, especially in the higher ed field where students and faculty don't do anything on fridays.

Aug. 9, 2006, 4:57 p.m.I can see this being a benefit but, how would that work .. work all 7 days 4-6 hours since we already have time off during the week...
I work 6 hours for 5 days and believe me feel it, in the monetary aspect, Yes I still miss that portion of the check missing.. But I am more relaxed which to me is more important, hopefully help me live longer
